Most women experience hot flashes at some point in their lives, but many breast cancer survivors have to tolerate severe hot flashes on top of so many difficult side effects of breast cancer treatment. Though ice packs and cold showers can provide short-term relief, longer-term relief is what we really need. For this, many women turn to hormone-replacement-therapy (HRT) and/or pharmaceutical drugs, such as Gabapentin, for control of extreme hot flashes, but both are associated with potentially negative side effects. A recent study compared the effectiveness of acupuncture with “sham” acupuncture, Gabapentin, and a placebo pill. Researchers found that acupuncture was best for treating hot flashes and that the beneficial effects of acupuncture lasted much longer than the other methods. The 2nd runner up?
