The news of cancer is always frightening, no one wants to hear it, but once I did, my life was changed forever.
My journey with cancer is not much different from other survivors, starting in 2012 where I initially had a misdiagnosis. Eventually, after running more tests I was finally confirmed with a diagnosis of Triple Negative Breast Cancer with three positive lymph nodes. Over the span of five months, I had to undergo chemotherapy, a double mastectomy, radiation, and eventually had the deep inferior epigastric perforators (DIEP) flap reconstruction surgery.
A couple of years later, once I began feeling better, I decided to dedicate myself to learning how to tattoo areolas for my sister survivors. Then in 2014, I visited Texas for a breast cancer retreat where I was able to give fellow “sisters” their areolas back through my tattooing. I truly believe having gone through the journey myself, I can help so many other people who are in the same condition. I understand what it feels like to be scared, alone, confused, and to be mentally and physically altered forever.
Now, for the past four years, I have continually done this for many other survivors, and also teaching art classes so other artists can create proper 3D areolas tattoos. It is incredibly important that I help people by giving them unconditional love and support. My life has not been the same since my diagnosis; it is the worst and greatest thing that has ever happened to me.
However, today I open my heart and arms to people I do not know, but once we start sharing our stories with each other, we become instant friends/sisters.
